I'm actually from New Hampshire and couldn't be more happy to be in LA, even more so ... happy to be in LA doing what I love the most, and for a brand new musical at that. Before The Spidey Project I had recently wrapped up my previous gig and went back to a website that posts jobs for musicians that I frequent. There I saw an ad that read something like: "Music Director needed for 'The Spidey Project' " Just the name alone "The Spidey Project" grabbed my attention; what on earth is a "Spidey Project?" The post provided links to the original New York production on YouTube. I let the clips roll as I went through the drill, attaching my resume to an email with a quick letter of intent, but I didn't pay much attention to the videos. To be honest, I was just interested in finding more work as a musician at that time, never mind a creative endeavor. I wasn't quite aware of what I was getting myself into just yet.
Not too long after submitting my resume I received a call from David Chrzanowski, the director, telling me he would be interested in having me fill the director of music position. At first I was unsure because at that point I was actually already offered another contract for work as a pianist/accompanist. I went back online and payed closer attention to the videos of The Spidey Project to weigh my options. While watching the clips for a second time, I had one of those moments where your artistic and creative juices just erupt like a volcano. I fell in love with the score immediately. The idea to this show is so clever. I knew I wanted to be a part of this, had to be a part of this, no questions asked. Before I knew it, I was flying from Manchester, New Hampshire to Los Angeles, California. Fun fact - I actually flew out the same day that I was going to sign my other contract for another musical had Spidey Project not captured my obsession and inspiration as a director of music. A quick hop and a skip across the country and I was here in Los Angeles. Erin Scott, our stage manager, picked me up from the airport and brought me straight to auditions where I met David. Right away I was blown away by some power house auditions. Some of the talent was overwhelming. I've worked with actors from Boston, NYC all the way down to Miami, up and down the East Coast. But holy hell, actors in L.A. got pipes, man, I mean, can they sing. After three days of show stopping auditions we finally forged a cast. It wasn't easy deciding who gets in and who gets cut. I can't emphasize enough how talented these actors and singers were in the auditions. Three weeks later we are two weeks into rehearsal and progress made thus far on the music is so much more than I could have asked or hoped for. Coming out here I was slightly nervous. I didn't know what kind of people I'd be getting myself involved with for the next three months of my life. To my relief, everyone has been beyond wonderful. Everyone! Its extremely kind of David for taking me under his roof, Erin as well. The cast has been really receptive to me and I've loved working with them these past two weeks. I've really felt as though I've received a very warm welcome into the Theatre Unleashed family. I can't thank everyone enough for that. I can't wait to see Spidey Project in action, full production, on the stage. It's going to be entertaining in every way possible. Come see the show. Trust me, you don't want to miss out.
