It all seems so familiar…you sip your coffee and look across the dimly lit room with music playing gently in the background and you wonder what people are talking about, what stories are unfolding before your eyes but just out of ear shot as Los Angelinos drink their lattes and mochas. Once again, you have a chance to find out. Through a Caffeine Haze is back. In these evenings of intimate live performances, Theatre Unleashed brings you all new original theatrical shows that will make your caffeine-addled brains percolate with excitement and ideas. Traveling to various coffee houses throughout the Los Angeles area, Theatre Unleashed will unveil two distinctly different live shows featuring hilarious, thought-provoking and experimental pieces that all take place, well…in your local coffee shop.
TU takes you once again Through a Caffeine Haze…Theatre Unleashed welcomes back its popular Coffee Shop Series with all new one acts, offering an intimate peek into everyday coffee shop encounters.LOS ANGELES –Theatre Unleashed is proud to announce the return of Through a Caffeine Haze, a series of original works, running Oct. 12 at the Talking Stick Café in Venice, Oct. 20 and 26 at the M Street Café in Sherman Oaks and finishing up with a special performance Oct. 28 at the company’s new home, The Sherry Theatre in North Hollywood.
Once again, the company is producing the show without the use of a traditional stage, choosing instead to perform these works in two of the most popular coffee shops in L.A.
“There’s something freeing about performing in a non-traditional theatre for an actor,” says Gregory Crafts, one of the shows’ two directors. “It’s a different energy. It’s exciting. It’s more intimate, which fits perfectly with our theme for the season.”
Through a Caffeine Haze is comprised of two different shows, each featuring its own director and three original works that have one thing in common: they all take place in a coffee shop. Producers decided to make the set as realistic as possible, by having the cast perform in actual coffee shops, mixed in with patrons and bringing a greater sense of reality to the show itself.
Crafts’ anthology (Watching the World Go By) features vignettes about a ridiculous plan with no hope of success (The Writers), a chance encounter that reveals true love…in its own way (Cupid’s Beau) and a light-hearted look about the different ways we communicate in the Digital Age (@twitts).
The other anthology (Lies, Lies, Lies), directed by Matt Ryan, features pieces about a conversation made up of nothing but absolute falsehoods (Lies, Lies, Lies), a love triangle between a husband, his wife and her shrink (Laws of Necessity) and catching a friend in her deception (Counting Rita).
“The coffee shop has become synonymous with meeting,” Ryan said. “People meet for first dates, break ups, to talk about problems with work, school, marriage, life in general. It’s a mysterious group of people all doing the same thing…meeting! Then there are those who are alone. Why? I’ve always wondered what some of those other quiet conversations might be about. This is a chance to eavesdrop without the guilt!”
Through a Caffeine Haze compliments the company’s current Main Stage production of the critically acclaimed Friends Like These, playing at the Sherry alongside the new Theatre Unleashed late night show Pulp Graveyard, which presents the stories of old dime store comic book and serials live on stage. Theatre Unleashed is also pleased to bring back its sketch comedy troupe Die Gruppe, this November.
