"Very good performances from everyone onstage, a tightly written story, and smooth direction made this a thoroughly enjoyable theatre experience! So glad I finally got to see this!!!"

my evil plan

my evil planMuhuhahahahahahaha.... ::coughcough::. Whoops. Sorry, still in Super Sidekick mode at the moment. Anyhow. Hi! Long time, no see! Hope you're well. Have you noticed all of the new changes and updates on the site? If not, check 'em out! Yeah, I've been working on updating things around here quite a bit lately. That's because I'm about ready to start pushing this show on to the worldwide theatrical community. Hard.

Even though I'm not the first person in the world to try and sell a play, this is an experiment for me on a very personal level. I've never done anything like this before. That being said, I wasn't really a playwright before this show, either so I won't let inexperience stop me. I'm approaching this with an open mind, patience and the will to succeed. Only good things can come of that.

So, where am I now? Well, the script is now availble through Lulu.com. I'd been making small revisions and changes to the book over the last few months. Little things here and there. Not worth blogging about. Really, really nitpicky stuff. However, after seeing this last proof copy (and making a couple of small changes - surprise, surprise), I'm FINALLY satisfied. Yay. So, there's that.

Where do I want to go? Well, great question. First and foremost, I want to see the book in stores. I want to see productions of it going up around the world. I want to see another, bigger New York run. Off-Broadway to start, then Broadway. I want to see the movie get done. I want to bring it to Edinburgh like how I brought it to New York. That may seem like a lot, but hey, you gotta think big.

My plan from here branches out in a couple of different directions. Here's what I'm looking at:

Self-Publishing

  • Research marketing techniques for self-publishers
  • Buy an ISBN number for the finalized print copy
  • Purchase globalREACH distribution through Lulu.com to get the book on Amazon and make it eligible to be ordered by brick-and-mortar bookstores
  • Contact independent bookstores directly about carrying the book (Sam French, anyone? Now THERE would be some irony...)
  • Donate copies to libraries

eBook

  • Format the script for ePublishing
  • Purchase an ISBN number for this version
  • Secure distribution online through Amazon, iTunes, BN.com, etc.
  • Market it alongside the print edition

Productions

  • Do a reading of the show with age-appropriate actors
  • Submit the script to a short list of companies I like and respect that may be interested
  • Submit the script to college theatre departments around the US
  • Find a progressive high school willing to put the show up, unedited, with their students
  • Research ways to get the show to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013

Basically, the idea is to make as much noise with the script as possible as to get others interested in putting it up, to the point where people are contacting me for the rights and buying the script unsolicited, instead of vice-versa.If these steps don't work, then I'll try something else with the show. I will figure this out at one point.

Some of these steps are pretty cut-and-dry, while others are a lot more complex. The teen reading may seem odd, but honestly I've never heard the script read aloud by actual teenagers. The cool thing is, I have access to some really talented teen actors right now that are in the cast of Super Sidekick the Musical, and I'm planning on taking full advantage of this opportunity. Why do this? Well, honestly, just to confirm it holds up. I'm confident it will, but I want to be sure. Look for that to happen very soon. Same with the Self-Publishing and eBook agendas.

It's going to take time and effort, but hey - that's what all worthwhile things in life require, isn't it? Onward and upward.
