LOS ANGELES - Theatre Unleashed is proud to announce Through a Caffeine Haze, a series of original works that runs Mondays and Tuesdays from Sept. 9-23. Continuing in its mission to push artistic boundaries, the company is producing the show without the use of a traditional stage, choosing instead to perform these works in coffee shops throughout L.A.
Through a Caffeine Haze is comprised of two different shows (Buzzed and Double Shot), each featuring three original works that have one thing in common: they all take place in a coffee shop. As such, the company's producers decided to try a nontraditional approach to presenting these pieces. First, they decided to take the show on the road, performing at multiple venues around the city to give these shows and their writers more exposure. Second, they decided to make the set as realistic as possible, by having the cast perform in actual coffee shops, mixed in with patrons and bringing a greater sense of reality and intimacy to the show itself.
"Coffee shops are fascinating places where stories unfold before your very eyes... but just out of ear shot," said Artistic Director Phillip Kelly. "These particular stories deal with the absurdities and sometimes harsh realities that one has to deal with. It's our hope that the coffee shop venue will make these various themes more immediate for the audience."
Through a Caffeine Haze compliments the company's Main Stage production of The Tempest, which runs Thursdays through Sundays from Sept. 5-28 at Studio/Stage in Los Angeles. It is the first in a series of experimental artistic projects that Theatre Unleashed plans to unveil over the next few years. The next project will be the resurgence of the revolutionary Dead Beat Poets Society... details to come soon.

LOS ANGELES - Theatre Unleashed is proud to announce the next show of its 2008 Main Stage season. The Tempest will run from Sept. 5-28 (Thursdays-Sundays) at Studio/Stage off Western Avenue in Los Angeles. This Shakespeare classic marks the first full length production for the fledgling company, fresh off a successful run of its introductory show, What We Should Have Said: An Anthology of One Acts for L.A.
The Tempest opens with the powerful sorcerer Prospero, in a fit of rage and revenge, conjuring a magical tempest upon the ocean that shipwrecks Alonso, the King of Naples and his company of travelers, including his jealous brother Sebastian and the scheming lord Antonio who plot to kill him. While the castaways deal with Prospero's minions -- the mischievous spirit Ariel and the blighted creature Caliban -- it's not until Alonso's son Ferdinand falls in love with Prospero's beautiful daughter Miranda that the stage is truly set for Shakespeare’s final masterpiece.
"I wanted to direct this show because of the possibilities of interplay between the fundamental ideals of freedom and revenge, and how those ideals can be either redemptive or destructive to a man's soul," said Director Jeff Soroka. "Beyond the brilliant moments of both comedy and drama, there is a mystical romance, a hunger for political ambition, a beautiful message of forgiveness and a brutal struggle between humanity's better and lesser natures."
Last year, Soroka gained local acclaim for his raw, chthonic production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which featured several of the same artists he is now working with in The Tempest. In his latest production, he wanted to once again infuse ethereal elements to make the show more intimate, more focused and slightly different than how it has been presented in the past. This production features design elements geared toward drawing the audience closer to the island, enveloping them in the show itself. Further, Soroka uses a number of spirits, influenced by the fluid movement of the Japanese kuroko, to enhance the action.
"Jeff is an incredible artist, just a dynamo who understand what makes live theatre work," said Andrew Moore, president of Theatre Unleashed. "He doesn't direct so much as he summons the kind of magic that sends a chill up your spine in a darkened house. It's a privilege to work with him in our inaugural season."
After the opening of The Tempest, Theatre Unleashed is also set to unveil a side project, Through a Caffeine Haze, a series of one acts featuring company members performing in coffee shops throughout the city. Theatre Unleashed is also in rehearsals for the original full-length show Pin-Up Girls, which follows a troupe of San Francisco burlesque dancers as they encounter the new-found freedom American women discovered during World War II, reshaping traditional gender roles for good.

From Red Snapper: "I'm helping my theatre company, Theatre Unleashed, raise a little extra capital for venue rental for our upcoming production of The Tempest (Sept. 5-28, Thurs-Sun). Since we are a first year company (incorporated April Fool's Day) and we're working on our tax-exempt status, every little bit of revenue helps. I decided to make some pasties to throw into the mix. I'm skipping eBay right now because of the seller's fees. I want all the money to go to the theatre.
Here's the deal. I handmade each of the following pairs of pasties. All of them are lined and will be delivered to you in person or via mail with a cute little storage pouch if you are the lucky purchaser. Payments are accepted through our Pay Pal buttons. I'll get them out after payment is received. I'll add more pasties over the course of the week.
Periwinkle blue hearts with black trim and black tassels - $15
Coral-red hearts with Swarovski crystals - $15 These pasties are 2-1/2 inches wide and 2-1/2 inches tall at the center. Trimmed in red and gold. Ruby and Sun AB size 20 Swarovski crystals.
Watermelon red with black trim and black tassels - $15 These pasties are 2-1/2 inches in diameter. Trimmed in black with 3" black tassels. I swear by this construction for twirling. The spinners make twirling easy. Watermelon red is the color that fashion designers and color consultants say works with every skin tone.
Light blue with rhinestones - $15
Pink with blue and pink trim and rhinestones - $15
I'll remove pics as they sell. Thanks for helping the theatre company!" - Red Snapper
